Joseph Desa was born at Copertino, Italy, on September 18, 1603. In 1625 he was ordained priest. The intense desire for union with Christ manifested itself in ecstatic moments and episodes of levitation that aroused suspicions in the Inquisition. The Holy Office tried him in 1634 and in the end declared him innocent. He died at Osimo in the Marches in 1663 and was canonized in 1767 with name Saint Joseph of Copertino.
