Vasiliy Yakovlevich Sitnikov was born in 1915 in Novo-Rakitino, Russia and was a member of the first generation of non-conformist artists. Did not receive any specialized art education. Studied at a boat building technikum in Moscow from 1933; at the RabFak of the Institute of Eastern Studies, Moscow, from 1935. Active in Moscow until 1975 (apart from the period under arrest 1941-1944); 1975-1980 lived in Austria; from 1981 in New York. After the death of Stalin he established his own school of art in 1950s, dedicated to studying postimpressionist trends. His work is original and easily recognizable, evoking Russian musical and poetical tradition. Best known as a graphic artist. In the late 1930s also worked as an animated film artist. Exhibited in Vienna, Washington, London, Paris, Duesseldorf, Venice, Torino, Tokyo, West Berlin, in New York in Podval Gallery. Sitnikov died in New York in 1987. Belongs to the Nonconformist artists of 1960s-1970s.

Цитата: «В 1960-е гг. выдвинулся в число наиболее значительных мастеров московского "неофициального искусства". В 1975 эмигрировал, последние годы жил в Нью-Йорке. Создавал живопись и графику в традициях символизма с характерным мотивом безбрежной степи, в цветном мареве которой тонут странные фигуры его героев-чудаков». Умер в Нью-Йорке.
