I need to do one of these for the tuning I play in - open Em, which is almost, but not quite the same as 'standard' tuning & renders this chart kind of irrelevant to me... especially as I play with the strings inverted (bass strings on the bottom, high strings on top!!). I sometimes switch to standard tuning when I'm teaching my student some things & it quietly does my head in... figuring it out in my tuning, switching it to standard tuning, then showing him how to play it 'right way up'
This is the price I pay for never having had any guitar lessons myself!!
Depends what they want to learn... & how they want to do it. Nothing would make me happier than to teach someone 'my way' of playing guitar, as I think it has a unique sound & chord voicings you don't get from 'standard' tuning... but that would be like a blind man in a dark room, looking for a black cat that isn't there
My only student came to me with a fair grasp of 'the basics' but wanted help in learning particular pieces of music in particular styles, which led to me showing him a lot more than just chord shapes - we got into strumming & picking patterns & how to 'flow' from one position to another without loss of rhythm & tempo
How long to teach someone?? I'm still learning new stuff, just by picking up the guitar & playing it... & I first did that in 1984!!
