For ENGin students in Ukraine, these conversations help break the language barrier, giving them access to new academic and professional opportunities. They open the door to a new culture. Most importantly, they offer friendship and emotional support - a safe space in the chaos of war.
On a national level, ENGin work connects Ukraine with the world, propelling its postwar reconstruction and longer-term economic & social development.
ENGin volunteers do not need any teaching or tutoring experience. Knowledge of Ukrainian is not required. You simply commit to speaking with a student in English for 1 hour/week, a minimum of 10-12 weeks.
The Frequently Asked Questions below for more details:
Do I need to be a native English speaker? No! We have many volunteers who learned English as a second language. You should speak at an advanced level (C1 or higher).
Do you require experience? No teaching or tutoring experience is required.
Do you provide training? Yes, we require all volunteers to attend a two-part training where we share all the information you'll need to succeed as an ENGin volunteer!
What will I talk about with my student? We provide session plans that can guide you through sessions with your student. You may choose to use these session plans or you may find that open conversation works best.
Do I need to speak Ukrainian to participate? No, most of our volunteers do not know any Ukrainian.
How long is the commitment? We require both volunteers and students to commit to meeting 1 hour a week for a minimum of 3 months. However, we welcome volunteers to stay as long as they want!
When do I have to meet with my student? You will indicate convenient days and times for you. Then, we'll match you and your student based on your availability, taking into consideration your schedule and time zone.
What ages are allowed to volunteer? We welcome volunteers ages 14+. Our oldest volunteer is 89!
